Team Fortress 2 hasn't gone completely unchanged over the last four years. What is important is the community's support of the game.
However, if and when the Heavy update will drop isn't important to the success of TF2. The Heavy is meant to receive an update centered around giving the class new weapons and a general rework. However, there is still supposedly an update in the works as one of the game's major classes. In short, Valve's silence on TF2 could easily come down to a stronger focus on other projects. With Alex being such a huge success, there have been rumors that Valve has put their full attention on creating more VR games, though nothing concrete has been announced. A good chunk of TF2's main developers was taken off the project to work on the hit VR title Half-Life Alex. The lack of communication from Valve regarding Team Fortress 2 can certainly be seen as a bad sign for the future of the game. TF2's main appeal has become the community of dedicated fans that continue to support and give it new life with mods, cosmetics and new strategies to mix up the meta. In reality, most games as old as Team Fortress 2 have gone much longer without seeing even a small patch from their developers. Many may wonder why a game that is 14 years old and hasn't seen a major update since 2017 is still played today. Even titles that tried to recapture TF2's appeal, like Monday Night Combat and even Overwatch, haven't thrived in the same way for as long, despite having more competitive gameplay. Through a dedicated community, a simulated economy and dynamic class-based shooting, Team Fortress 2 has gone on to have more longevity than most games its age. Valve's premier FPS game, Team Fortress 2, has been going strong for the last 14 years despite a lack of developer communication - outside of a response to a recent leak.
